Saints Stand Strong: Jeff Ireland Affirms No Surrender After Broncos Swipe Cody Rager

Recently, the Denver Broncos lured assistant college scouting director Cody Rager, a rising star in the New Orleans Saints front office, back to join coach Sean Payton’s team.

However, the man who coached Rager in New Orleans didn’t exactly feel the same way, so if the Saints should be worried about that, then say what you will.

Assistant general manager Jeff Ireland stated the Saints “will be just fine” without Rager at the Senior Bowl on Tuesday. He also mentioned how excited he is to mentor a new young executive.

Ireland remarked, “I mean, we’re not— I’m not throwing up the white towel or anything.” “Oh my goodness, please. Cody is a young scout with talent. I’ve known him since our time in Miami.

“We’re going to be fine, but I’m really excited for him to start a new journey with the Denver Broncos.”

We’re going to be alright, but we have a lot of outstanding scouts and young individuals who are growing up.

I look forward to mentoring another young man.

Rager had spent the previous nine seasons with the Saints, rising through the ranks to become Ireland’s assistant in the college scouting department in New Orleans.

In 2021, he was appointed assistant college scouting director for the organization.

He remained in that position for three years until departing to take a position as vice president of player personnel with the Broncos.

Ireland further mentioned that Rager and Ireland had previously collaborated.

In 2012, Rager made his NFL debut as a scouting assistant for the Miami Dolphins.

Ireland was the general manager of the Dolphins at the time.

The same year that New Orleans hired Rager, Ireland signed a contract with the Saints.

Ireland has had interviews for various general manager positions throughout the years, including one with the Los Angeles Chargers this offseason.

On the same day that the Chargers announced they had signed Joe Hortiz from the Baltimore Ravens to be their new general manager, Ireland addressed reporters.

Ireland replied, “Yeah, it’s a great process.” It gives you energy. It’s thrilling.

I thought my interview with those guys went rather well.

I am truly grateful to the Spanos family for the interview; nevertheless, considering that there are only 32 of them—possibly even fewer when ownership is taken into account—it was a stimulating experience. I enjoyed getting ready for it.
