Dak and His Contract: Can the Cowboys Avert Dak Prescott’s Huge 2024 Contract Hit?
Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are the subject of many inquiries. Following their depressing loss to the Green Bay
Packers in the Wild Card game, some Dallas supporters questioned whether the 30-year-old field general is
still the best option behind centre.
But his 2024 deal raises even more questions that need to be addressed right away.
With a $59 million cap cost heading into his final year of a four-year contract, the Mississippi State product will make it
extremely difficult to make some much-needed roster changes.
Is extending Dak Prescott’s contract the only way for the Cowboys to avoid the cap hit?
According to Cowboy Maven’s Anthony Licciardi, Should the Cowboys decide to offer the eight-year veteran slinger a contract,
it would immediately mitigate the potential cap hit that would prevent Jerry Jones’ team from retooling the team for another Super Bowl run.
Regretfully, there hasn’t been much success in the negotiations between Prescott’s and Jones’ camps.
With every day that their star centre refuses to sign on the dotted line, the likelihood of the contract scandal
extending into the preseason grows.
The alternative is to “flip the switch” with an automatic conversion. This clause allows the team to turn part of his base salary
into a bonus that will be paid out for throughout the season.
This way, the team can acquire talent that will help Prescott win the Super Bowl.
What about a trade?
If, for some reason, extending the contract becomes an unviable option, the next best thing is to trade Dak Prescott to
another NFL team.
While Prescott still has a terrible postseason reputation, his 4516 passing yards and 36 passing touchdowns are still attractive
numbers for a number of NFL teams.
In fact, Jeff Saturday, the former head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, strongly advises the 30-year-old to ask to be traded to
the Atlanta Falcons. He is a talented quarterback who can make the most of the team’s fantastic offensive tools.
