£3.6m Celtic star ‘subject’ of late bidding war as Southampton, West Brom and more set to make move
The Celtic winger Liel Abada, who signed a contract extension barely four months ago, has an uncertain future at Parkhead.
Up to three Championship clubs are reportedly eyeing the Israeli international, and it’s also thought that sides from the
Bundesliga and Ligue 1 are closely monitoring the situation.
Abada has largely been a success story in Glasgow since his £3.6m arrival from Maccabi Petah Tikva F.C.
In his first two seasons in Scotland he lifted the league title and was also able to get his hands on the Scottish Cup and two
League Cups.
The 22-year-old scored 10 Premiership goals in each of his two previous seasons, becoming him the only non-European
player to do so and winning the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year title in the process.
Due to his impressive performances in his first two campaigns, Abada’s contract was extended, and it is currently valid until 2027.
He has, however, had a difficult debut season and, following a protracted absence from the starting lineup, has only lately rejoined it.
The Daily Mail claims that the likes of Southampton, Watford and West Brom are all hoping to land the player on loan in a
bid to boost their promotion hopes.
This interest has reportedly been prompted by the player’s ‘challenging situation’ at Celtic Park amid the ongoing conflict
between Israel and Palestine.
According to The Daily Record, a number of Parkhead supporters who have taken a pro-Palestine attitude
have questioned whether Abada could stay in Glasgow for an extended period of time given the ongoing conflict with Israel.
Former Celtic player Nir Bitton has been outspoken in his criticism of the Hoops’ supporters, and he has received advice from
a number of Israeli international teammates and analysts back home to leave the Scottish champions as soon as possible.
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is believed to be ‘dismissive’ of talks linking the player with a move away,
particularly after his recent contact extension in September.
In a previous interview, he provided commentary on the matter and clarified that Abada is still employed by Celtic.
“He’s a very young guy so he needs help and support,” Rodgers stated.
It’s apparent that I support him. Although you will never be the player’s greatest friend, there are occasions when you must
be that person for them in order to give them some solace and the courage to press on.
He’s now content and settled here.”
